Excessive exposure to sunlight can cause dark patches on the skin which can become very noticeable and make you feel self-conscious. However, there are some natural remedies available to help treat dark spots or discolored skin, or to produce an all-over lightening effect, and you might have everything you need in your kitchen right now.
For example, potatoes work very well for lightening dark skin areas. Let’s take a look at a few different ways potatoes can be put to use in your beauty routine.
To lighten dark undereye circles
Dark circles can sometimes be caused by lack of sleep or illness, but persistent dark circles may require more intervention. A very simple trick that has been used for many years is to simply place slices of raw potato over each eye and relax for 15 minutes.
Not only is this a great little spa treat for yourself at the end of a busy day, but the catecholamine present in potato slices can actually have a bleaching and brightening effect on the skin around your eyes, greatly reducing the appearance of those circles.
To alleviate sunburn
Of course, the best defense against sunburn is a high-quality sunscreen which is reapplied throughout the day, but sometimes we simply get caught outside for longer than we mean to, and then we have a sunburn to contend with.
Raw potato slices can be very soothing on sunburned skin, and can prompt faster healing and prevent darkening. This works best for small sunburnt areas such as the back of the neck, the tops of the hands, along the forehead, etc.
To lighten the appearance of freckles or age spots
Use a blender or juicer to reduce a raw potato to a pulp. Strain out the starchy material and collect 1 tablespoon of juice to mix with 2 tablespoons of lemon juice. Using a cotton ball, gently dab this mixture all over your face, being careful to avoid your eyes as this mixture will sting.
Allow the mixture to remain on your face for 20 minutes before rinsing with cool water. The mixture of potato and lemon juice can be very effective in lightening not only the appearance of freckles or age spots, but also acne scars or other similarly darkened areas.
To lessen blemishes
Blemishes can sometimes leave dark spots on your skin, particularly if you tend to pick at or squeeze pimples. To help reduce these dark spots, use a blender or juicer to pulp a potato, and then use a cotton swab to gently apply the pulp to any affected areas. You can repeat this process up to three times a week.
For all-over lightening
Raw potato slices can be rubbed all over the skin to achieve a gradual and all-natural brightening effect. Thinly slice a whole potato and gently rub the slices over any areas you wish to lighten. Follow with a cool-water rinse after 20 minutes. You can repeat this process twice a week.
